Bitcoin Sabotage Wargame

Game Overview

“Sabotage Bitcoin” is a board game where players are divided into two teams – Defenders and Saboteurs. They compete to build and secure or disrupt a digital network represented by a modular board. The game combines resource management, strategy, and team play.

Game Components

  • Hexagonal Tiles: Represent different zones in the network, each producing specific resources.
  • Resource Cards: Computing Power, Public Trust, Cryptography, and Capital.
  • Development Cards: Special actions for players.
  • Network Cards: Allow building and upgrading nodes and connections.
  • Player Pieces: Settlements (Nodes), Cities (Super Nodes), and Roads (Network Connections).
  • System Bug Token: Used to disrupt resource production.
  • Two Six-Sided Dice: For resource production.
  • Victory Point Tokens: Track team’s progress.
  • Turn Marker: Indicates the current player.

Setup

  • Lay out hexagonal tiles randomly to form the game board.
  • Each player starts with two Nodes and two Network Connections.
  • Distribute starting Resource Cards based on the initial placement of Nodes.

Game Play

Turn Structure

  1. Resource Production: Roll dice to activate zones that produce resources.
  2. Trading Phase: Players trade Resource Cards amongst themselves.
  3. Building and Action Phase: Use resources to build/upgrade Nodes and Network Connections, or buy Development Cards.

Teams

  • Players are divided into two teams: Defenders and Saboteurs.
    • Defenders aim to build and secure the network.
    • Saboteurs try to disrupt and destabilize it.

Development Cards

  • Players buy these cards using specific combinations of resources.
  • Cards provide various actions or bonuses.

Note: This is a very very shitty example of a development card. Will make many more over time.

Examples of Development Cards

  • Firewall Upgrade (Defender Card): Costs 2 Computing Power, 1 Cryptography. Protects a Node from the System Bug.
  • DDoS Attack (Saboteur Card): Costs 3 Computing Power. Temporarily disables a Node, stopping resource production.
  • Public Relations Campaign (Either Team): Costs 2 Public Trust, 1 Capital. Gain extra resources or Victory Points.
  • Encryption Breakthrough (Either Team): Costs 2 Cryptography, 1 Computing Power. Allows a look at an opponent’s hand or steals a resource card.
  • Investment Round (Defender Card): Costs 2 Capital. Provides resources for building or upgrading Nodes.

System Bug Token

  • Functions as a disruptor. Moved to a tile when a player rolls a 7, blocking resource production from that tile.
  • The player moving the System Bug may steal a resource from a player with a Node adjacent to that tile.

Victory Points

  • Earned by building Nodes, Super Nodes, and achieving special objectives.
  • The first team to reach the set Victory Points wins the game.

Additional Mechanics

  • Longest Network: Awarded to the team with the longest continuous Network Connection. Grants additional Victory Points.
  • Largest Network: Awarded to the team with the most Nodes and Super Nodes combined. Grants additional Victory Points.

Strategies

  • Defenders focus on network expansion and protection, using Development Cards for defense and resource generation.
  • Saboteurs aim to strategically disrupt the Defenders’ network, using their Development

Cards to interfere with resource production and network expansion.

Game Balance and Fair Play

  • The game is designed to ensure balance between the two teams. The power of Development Cards and the impact of the System Bug are carefully calibrated to avoid overpowering one team over the other.
  • Random tile setup and resource distribution at the beginning of the game ensure that each game session presents a new challenge and strategy.
